Commissioners OK application for courthouse lights grant

READING, Pa. - The Berks County Commissioners have endorsed a plan to seek funds to help put lights back on top of the courthouse in downtown Reading.

The commissioners on Thursday gave two local companies -- Lacey Electric and Fromm Electric -- permission to apply for a grant through the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority.

The money, along with private donations, would cover most of the cost to restore the lights with a more efficient LED system.

The top of the building was illuminated for nearly 80 years. The lights came down last year during renovations. The commissioners then voted not to replace them because of the cost involved.

Anyone interested in donating to the fundraising campaign can find more information on the "Turn the Courthouse Lights Back on" Facebook page.
