Community up in arms over proposed fence around Wyomissing football field

Community upset over proposed fence around football field

WYOMISSING, Pa. - A fence is causing major controversy in one Berks County suburb.

The Wyomissing Area School District wants to put a fence around the football field. Community members have a wide range of opinions.

"I do not see the point," said Margit Cacchione, of Wyomissing.

"I personally think it is a great idea," said Diana DeMarte, of Wyomissing.

"Frankly, I am indifferent," said Sam Macrina, of Wyomissing.

The school board proposed putting up a fence around the Spartan Pride Stadium to protect the facilities from damage and vandalism and to ensure that spectators attending athletic events pay admission fees, according to the district's website.

"I think it will help to make the whole facility look more up-to-date, nicer," said DeMarte.

"Is there any other high school in the state that does not have a fence around its athletic field? And I dare say that this will probably be one of the nicest fences that you will ever want to see," said Dave Reeser, of Wyomissing.

But others in the community oppose the project. The debate has gotten so passionate in Wyomissing that signs are filling up front yards in opposition. One of the major concerns is access to the field.

"My 9-year-old plays down here all the time after school and so do all of his buddies, and I have a fear that it will get locked up, even though they say it will not," said Cacchione.

"People use that track to run, and kids play on that field. I have not seen any vandalism. I have been here for 25 years. I do not really know that all of a sudden a fence is necessary," said Mark Hunsberger, Wyomissing.

Another concern is how the district intends to pay for the fence. District officials plan to solicit donations from community members, alumni and local businesses to fund the project.

The school board was scheduled to make a final decision at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
