Coroner IDs man stabbed to death in downtown Reading

READING, Pa. - The coroner has released the name of the man who was killed during a fight in the heart of downtown Reading on Thursday afternoon.

Joseph Ashford, 48, of Reading, was stabbed to death outside the Sovereign Plaza office building, in the courtyard between the 400 blocks of Penn and Cherry streets, police said.

Police apprehended the suspect, Raymond Arturo Khalief Searles Jr., a short time later. Searles told 69 News he stabbed Ashford in self-defense.

Searles was committed to the Berks County Jail without bail on homicide charges.
