Crash closes I-78 in Berks overnight

GREENWICH TWP., Pa. - A crash involving two tractor trailers closed a stretch of Interstate 78 in Berks County overnight.

The accident happened shortly before midnight Monday in the eastbound lanes of I-78, between the Route143/Lenhartsville (Exit 35) and Route 737/Kutztown/Krumsville (Exit 40) interchanges, in Greenwich Township.

One tractor trailer struck the rear of the other, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The driver of the truck, that was hit was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where the 40-year-old West Chester man was last reported to be in stable condition.

The driver of the striking truck, a 51-year-old man from York, was cited by police.

In addition to I-78 East being closed, a lane of Old Route 22, which runs adjacent to the highway, was also shut down.

Traffic was flowing freely again around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.
