Crash on Route 222 in Spring kills 1, injures 9 others

SPRING TWP., Pa. - A five-car crash on Route 222 in Berks County left one person dead and many injured.

The accident happened around 4:20 p.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes of Route 222, between the Broadcasting Road interchange and the Route 222 South/422 split, in Spring Township.

Authorities said 10 people were transported from the scene with an array of injuries. Beverly Greenwalt died of her injuries, according to the Berks County coroner.

Greenwalt, 78, of Leesport, was heading to the Johnny Mathis concert at the Santander Arena in downtown Reading at the time of the crash, according to family members.

The preliminary investigation, police said, suggests the driver of a pickup truck failed to stop for slowed traffic and created multiple collisions.

The highway was closed for at least six hours.
