Crash takes down pole, knocks out power in Bernville area

JEFFERSON TWP., Pa. - An accident has knocked out electricity to hundreds of homes in businesses in Berks County.

The crash was reported shortly before 4 p.m. Monday in the 700 block of New Schaefferstown Road in Jefferson Township, just north of the Route 183 split.

A vehicle struck a utility pole, bringing down both the pole and the wires attached to it.

A Met-Ed spokesperson told 69 News that, as a result, 804 of the utility's customers lost power.

Met-Ed crews are now working to replace the pole, but it will likely take several hours for them to restore electricity, the spokesperson said.

As for the vehicle's driver, the 59-year-old man was hurt in the crash, but officials could not provide information as to the extent of his injuries.
