Cumru police ID body of man found in pond

Victim is John Trujillo of Cockeysville, Maryland

CUMRU TWP., Pa. - Police have identified the man whose body was found floating in a pond behind a home in Berks County on Tuesday.

John Trujillo, 41, of Cockeysville, Maryland, was discovered by the owner of a property in the 300 block of Mount Penn Road in Cumru Township, south of Reading.

The property owner told police he doesn't know Trujillo or anything about the circumstances surrounding his death.

"Because of the body being in a body of water and the water being a different temperature than the air, it's hard to determine exactly how long the individual was there," said Chief Madison Winchester, Cumru Township Police Department.

An autopsy will be done Thursday morning in an effort to determine how Trujillo died. In the meantime, police said they are treating his death as suspicious, saying there were no immediate indications as to whether the death is a homicide or suicide.

Police said they are also working with the county's forensic unit to analyze Trujillo's cell phone in an effort to find information about what led him from his home in Maryland to Berks County and ultimately to the location where his body was found.

"For this to occur, there's a lot of questions," said Winchester. "It's not common. Individuals don't traverse through that area, that private property, even down that road is somewhat out of the way... and secluded."

Anyone who can help investigators is asked to contact the Cumru Township Police Department at 610-777-9595. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Alert Berks County via text to 847411, starting the message with alertberks, or by calling 877-373-9913.
