DA: No homicide charges in homeless man's death

READING, Pa. - Four people accused of brutally beating a homeless man inside a laundromat in Reading will not face homicide charges, said officials.

Robert Mohler's death was originally ruled a homicide, but Berks County District Attorney John Adams said that is no longer the case after a second opinion.

"What we have here is a battle of the experts -- one expert who says the cause of death is homicide, and we have another expert that states the cause of death is undetermined," Adams said.

Mohler, 49, was savagely attacked inside the Penn Street Laundromat in January. The cruel crime was captured on camera. According to police, he was ambushed by four people with a laundry cart and cone for absolutely no reason.

"I had a concussion and I was in the hospital for five days," Mohler told 69 News a few weeks before he passed away.

A forensic pathologist ruled his death was the result of the beating, but Adams said it wasn't clear cut so he got a second opinion for another forensic pathologist.

"Our job as prosecutors is to be able to prove our case beyond a reasonable doubt," said Adams. "We could not show a causal connection between the crime committed and the charge of homicide."

All four accused suspects are in custody and will not be charged with homicide. They are facing aggravated assault, robbery and other charges. Their cases are pending.
