READING, Pa. - A donation of food will help prevent a local senior from going hungry this holiday season.
Berks Encore announced plans Monday for its "Stuff the Cooler" event.
The organization has teamed up with Fleetwood Bank and Lausch's Moving and Storage to collect nonperishable food and toiletry items. The donations will then be distributed to Meals on Wheels clients in Berks County.
"This is a great opportunity for our program to raise community awareness and participation to support local seniors in need," said Alicia Waid, Meals On Wheels director for Berks Encore.
Coolers will be set up for collection next Mon., Dec. 16 through Fri., Dec. 20, at all Berks Encore centers, Fleetwood Bank branch locations and Lausch's Moving and Storage in Shillington.
"We'd like to thank Fleetwood Bank and Lausch's for working together to bring warmth and compassion to so many hungry and home-bound seniors who would otherwise go without," Waid said.
Nonperishable food items being sought during the campaign include the following:
- Canned mixed fruit (in light syrup)
- Applesauce (natural)
- Mixed dried fruit
- Canned tuna (in water)
- Canned chicken
- Peanut butter
- Low-sodium soups
- Brown rice
- Dry cereal
- Nonfat dry milk
