Drafts for Diddy: Fundraiser planned for dog shot in face

Hillside SPCA also collecting donations on website

BERN TWP., Pa. - A fundraiser on tap for this weekend aims to help cover the costs of caring for a dog that fell victim to violence.

Klinger's at the Airport in Bern Township is planning "Drafts for Diddy" to raise money for the 10-year-old German shepherd's mounting medical expenses.

Diddy was shot in the face inside a home in Pottsville last Saturday, police said. The Hillside SPCA took the dog to a veterinarian in Shillington for the emergency treatment he needed.

Tricia Moyer-Mentzer, an assistant manager at the shelter in North Manheim Township, said it's miraculous he survived, but now Hillside is left with more than $6,000 in medical bills.

"That's money that's going to take away from animals that were already in our care," she said.

From noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday, Klinger's at the Airport will donate 50 cents to the Hillside SPCA for each draft of craft beer it sells.

The Hillside SPCA is also accepting donations on its website.

As for Diddy, he's currently being cared for by a foster family, but he faces a long road to recovery.

"He has bullet fragments in his nasal area, in his jaw, and he's pretty much lost vision in his right eye," Moyer-Mentzer said.

The man accused of shooting Diddy has been jailed on a number of charges, including aggravated cruelty to an animal, recklessly endangering another person, and cruelty to an animal.
