Driver charged in crash that killed 2 teenagers in Berks

Suspect, 17, charged with homicide by vehicle

READING, Pa. - Charges have been filed in a single-car crash that killed two teenagers in Berks County late last year.

The driver of the car, a 17-year-old-boy from Womelsdorf, was charged Wednesday with two counts each of homicide by vehicle and vehicular manslaughter and a single count of reckless endangerment.

"Extreme, extreme recklessness," Berks County District Attorney John Adams told 69 News. "This is an example of an individual driving with absolutely no regard for number one, his passengers, himself."

The suspect is not yet in custody, Adams said. Also, his name is not being released because of his age.

"We will be taking a look and filing some motions in juvenile court that may significantly impact the ultimate disposition of this case," Adams said.

Sean M. Orner, 18, of Bethel Township, and Shanon L. Althouse, 18, of Womelsdorf, died at the scene of the wreck on Bricker Road in Upper Tulpehocken Township on December 26. The car went off the road, hit a tree and split in half.

"The incident that took place here, the facts of this case are egregious," Adams said. "We will talk more about the specific facts of this case when we get to court."

The driver suffered moderate injuries in the crash, according to state police.

The victims were students at Tulpehocken Jr./Sr. High School, where the Shanon Althouse Memorial Fund will hold its first pet drive on Saturday, April 28, from 8 a.m. until noon. Volunteers will be collecting donations for the kittens and cats being cared for at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.
