Driver dies after crash on I-78; passenger still critical

SALISBURY TWP., Pa. - One of two people seriously injured when their car slammed into a tractor trailer on Interstate 78 in Berks County has died.

Christopher Williams, 25, of Colmar, Montgomery County, died at Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown shortly after 3:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Lehigh County coroner, who determined teh cause of death to be cervical spine injuries.

Williams' passenger, Edmund Thomas, 22, of Churchville, Bucks County, was last reported to be in critical condition, also at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Williams was behind the wheel of a car when it struck the rear of a tractor trailer that was broken down along the eastbound shoulder of I-78 in Greenwich Township shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The tractor trailer's driver was not injured.

The crash closed the eastbound lanes of I-78 for approximately five hours.
