Elderly driver rolls car down embankment

Vehicle goes airborne, rolls, hits tree in Bern Twp., Berks Co.

BERN TWP., Pa. - An elderly driver was hurt after a dramatic crash Thursday morning in Berks County.

Police said the accident happened around 9:45 a.m. Thursday on West Leesport Road near Peach Blossom Road in Bern Township.

The driver, in his late 70s to early 80s, lost control of his car. Police said the car rolled several times, went airborne, hit a tree and landed at the bottom of an embankment.

It took crews about 25 minutes to free him from the car.

Police said it's not clear what caused the car to leave the road.

He was wearing his seat belt, and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
