Emergency road work restricts traffic at Routes 222, 662

Sinkhole opened in construction zone overnight

RICHMOND TWP., Pa. - Emergency road work restricted traffic through a normally busy intersection in Berks County for part of the day Wednesday.

The work was done to fill a sinkhole that opened overnight in the construction zone at Routes 222 and 662 in Richmond Township, south of Kutztown, according to PennDOT.

Both roads were lane-restricted, with flaggers in place, until 2 p.m. Wednesday while crews filled the hole with concrete, officials said.

PennDOT advised motorists that they should expect "major delays" and use caution when traveling through the work zone.

The area has been under construction for the past several months as crews work to convert the intersection into a roundabout.
