Eagles and Cougars hoping for District III gold

Exeter baseball, Kutztown softball eye deep District runs

The Exeter baseball team is looking to return to the District III-AAAA championship game this year. The Kutztown softball team is one of the hottest heading into the tournament at the AA level, and should be a tough out for any team.

Four out of the six teams within Berks I made the District III baseball tournament. But after Monday night's opening round, only two of them are left. Governor Mifflin is one. Exeter is the other. The sixth-seeded Eagles knocked off Warwick to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals. The win sets up a date with 3-seed Ephrata on Thursday as Exeter looks to make another deep run in the District 3 tournament.

The Eagles, as the 15-seed last year, played for a District championship, but came up one run short.

The Eagles had a lot of veterans on that team. But, they also had a lot of talent that came back this year and saw what it takes to get to a championship game.\

As for softball, Kutztown has earned the 6-seed at the double-A level.

The Cougars have drawn Pequea Valley in the first round on Thursday.

Kutztown went on a tear at the end of the year, winning eight straight before falling to Daniel Boone in a very close county semifinal.

The Cougars have taken a lot of momentum from that run down the stretch. The young team feels like it can match up up with anyone in the District field at this point.
