EXETER TWP., Pa. - Exeter police have a message for anyone traveling along the township's busiest thoroughfare.

"We are a well-trained, highly observant police department that has made it our mission to keep our residents and motorists safe," the department said in a post on its Facebook page Friday.

The message follows a pair of serious crashes that closed the same stretch of Perkiomen Avenue at Beechwood Drive. The first happened last Friday night; the second happened Tuesday evening.

"DUI played a part in both incidents, and it remains a huge problem," Exeter police said in their Facebook post. "The ETPD has made seven DUI arrests in the past 14 days. Four of those arrests came as a result of DUI-related crashes."

None of the injuries in either accident on Perkiomen Avenue was life-threatening, police said, but there's always next time.

"If you think it's not a big deal to drive a few blocks home, think again," police said. "The choices you make could save a child's life."

Drunk-driving hasn't been the only problem on that stretch of Perkiomen Avenue, which is also designated as Route 422 Business. Police said they have clocked at least one car traveling through the 3300 and 3400 blocks at 99 mph.
