Exeter police promote veteran officers to rank of sergeant

EXETER TWP., Pa. - The Exeter Township Police Department has three new sergeants in its ranks.

Ofc. David Bentz, Ofc. Sean Fullerton, and Detective Michael Godshall officially received the promotions at the townshipMonday night.

Bentz, a 23-year veteran of the ETPD, will oversee the department's traffic safety unit, which was recently reestablished after being disbanded nearly a decade ago.

"The department has listened to the residents," Bentz said. "We take traffic complaints seriously and it's time that we take steps in making our streets safer. With new enforcement initiatives, we will accomplish our goals."

Fullerton, a member of the department's community relations team, which aims to bridge the gap between residents and the police, will supervise a patrol unit.

"Exeter is a great place to live and work," said Fullerton, who has 14 years of experience. "I am proud of my community and I will work extremely hard to make this community proud of their police department."

Godshall, as a detective sergeant, will continue the work he's done for most of the 26 years he's been on the Exeter force.

"The Exeter Township Police Department has some of the best individuals in police work," Godshall said. "I am proud to serve with them and I am looking forward to new challenges."

Monday's promotions come about four months after Sgt. Matthew Harley was sworn in as Exeter's first-ever deputy police chief, and Sgt. Steve Schaeffer rose to the rank lieutenant, filling a role that had been vacant since 2006.
