Fallen Deputy's K9 Partner Dunks Sheriff During Fundraiser

KENHORST, Pa. - Many people on Friday found a deal they couldn't refuse -- buy five Taylor Swift raffle tickets for $2 each and get a free ice cream cone.

The ongoing raffle was part of a fundraising event at the Dairy Queen in Kenhorst, Berks County, to pay tribute to fallen sheriff's Deputy Kyle Pagerly, who was killed in the line of duty in late June.

"I can't say enough about the people of Berks County, how they come together in the face of any tragedy, or how people love to help out each other," said Hamid Chaudhry, owner of the Dairy Queen stores in Kenhorst and Exeter Township. "God bless America. God bless Berks County."

The event was filled with activities benefiting the Kyle Pagerly Memorial Fund.

There was even a dunk tank featuring Berks County Commissioner Kevin Barnhardt and Berks County Sheriff Eric Weaknecht, who indicated last year he wasn't exactly thrilled about getting dunked again.

"I said then it's going to be really tough to get me back in it," said Weaknecht. "But with this fund, I jumped right in, three times."

This year, he was dunked by Pagerly's K9 partner, Jynx.

"It was well worth it," said Weaknecht.

The fundraiser, which was sponsored by Berks Fire Water Restoration, was supposed to be dedicated to supporting local fire companies, but given that Pagerly was a volunteer firefighter for Spring Township, many also used the event to focus on his achievements.

"He protected us as a police officer, helped protect us as a firefighter, and he helped protect the country," said Chief Roger Weidenheimer, Kenhorst Fire Company. "So, it's important to show our appreciation to him."
