Fallen hero honored at R-Phils opening game

READING, Pa. - It was night full of cheers during opening day for the Reading Phillies at FirstEnergy Stadium.

But there were also some touching moments as many remembered Berks County Sheriff's Deputy Kyle Pagerly.

The players wore black jerseys with the word "Sheriff" emblazoned across the chest.

"It was kind of exciting for us because they're wearing a special jersey that is in Kyle's memory. It has his number on it, his badge on it, and we're really excited about that," said Berks County Sheriff, Eric Weaknecht.

Pagerly was killed in the line of duty last June while trying to an serve an arrest warrant in Albany Township.

Between games of Thursday's doubleheader, Pagerly's widow, Alecia, along with his K-9 Jynx, as well as family and friend, stepped on the field for a special tribute to Kyle Pagerly.

The Berks County Sheriff's Department presented Alecia Pagerly with Kyle's badge, along with a medal of honor.

"I can't even describe it," said Alecia Pagerly. "I mean I talked to some other people that have been in similar situations and they just didn't have the same support, and I'm just so thankful for everybody."

After the tribute, all the jerseys worn by the R-Phils players were autographed and auctioned off to benefit the Kyle Pagerly Memorial Fund.

"I think the worst thing that would come out of this is if people forgot him, so, just thank you for remembering him and keeping his memory alive," said Pagerly.

The Kyle Pagerly Memorial Fund will be used to support causes that Kyle Pagerly was passionate about, like a K-9 training facility, said Alecia Pagerly.
