Family needs wheelchair van after theirs totaled by drunk driver

Video: Sisters raise funds for...

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. - Marilin and Becky Guzman are sisters and best friends. For both, Guillermo, Becky's only son, is everything. When Guillermo was four months old, he suffered a traumatic brain injury.

"For 18 years, [Becky's] been a single mom. She's been there for him through everything. [That] little boy has been through so many surgeries throughout his life. They never expected him to live past five years of age. She just inspires me," Marilin told 69 News.

The sisters have only gotten closer since their both parents passed away.

"We lost our parents recently, within a year of each other, and since then, we've only had each other, and she's just been there for me," said Becky.

So when Becky was involved in a car accident, Marilin knew she had to do something to help her sister.

In April, a drunk driver hit Becky's wheelchair accessible van. The insurance company deemed the van a total loss.

Becky and Guillermo live in Muhlenberg Township, but Guillermo is under the care of specialists in Hershey.

Becky used the van to get Guillermo to and from his appointments. Just days before the accident, Guillermo had surgery.

"I'm worried if I come down that one day I need to do something for him in an instant, I'm not going to be able to," added Becky.

"Knowing that he still had follow-up visits back in Hershey, and all I thought about is 'how is he going back and forth?'" said Marilin.

The family said a wheelchair accessible van costs about $20,000.

Marilin knew she had to step up. She said monetarily, she knew she couldn't come up with the entire amount herself, so she decided to start a fundraiser for Becky and Guillermo through GoFundMe.

Both sisters agree, Marilin is the timid one of the two, but for her, it's all about her family.
