Fatal pedestrian crash closes Route 422 East in Exeter

EXETER TWP., Pa. - A fatal accident involving a pedestrian who was struck by a car has closed a busy stretch of Route 422 in Berks County.

The accident happened shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes of 422 / Perkiomen Avenue, near the Rite Aid pharmacy at 47th Street, in Exeter Township.

Officials said the victim is a Hispanic male in his mid-60s. His name is being withheld until his family is notified.

The Exeter Township Police Chief told 69 News the victim was struck by 2 cars. He suffered fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A heavy presence of emergency vehicles remained at the scene for hours. Eastbound traffic is being diverted around the area.

The Berks County Department of Emergency Services reported a heavy backlog of traffic through the township's main shopping district.

The drivers of the two cars stayed on scene and were taken in for questioning.
