Fightins fans urged to roll up sleeves, go to bat for American Red Cross

Blood drive held in memory of Frank Mascaro, a J.P. Mascaro & Sons owner

READING, Pa. - Reading Fightin Phils fans who go to bat for the American Red Cross will get to see their team go to bat against the Mets.

The Fightins have teamed up with the American Red Cross and J.P. Mascaro & Sons to hold a blood drive at FirstEnergy Stadium until 3 p.m. Monday.

Everyone who donates a pint of blood will receive four free tickets to the Fightins' game on Saturday and help Mascaro reach its goal of 1,000 pints of blood for the Red Cross in memory of Frank Mascaro, one of the company's owners, who died in 2013.

The donations will also help the Red Cross overcome a serious shortfall this summer. Donations are down approximately eight percent since May, resulting in about 80,000 fewer donations than expected, officials said.

"Many people say they never fully understood the importance of donating blood until they or someone they love needed it," said Colin Riccobon, external communications manager of the Red Cross Northeastern Pennsylvania Blood Services Region. "Summer months are always a challenging time for blood collections, and there are patients depending on donors every day to give them hope."

The Red Cross said its shortfall of donations is significant enough that it could experience an emergency situation in the coming weeks.
