Fire forces suspension of operations at Hereford post office

PO box customers can retrieve mail at Palm facilty

HEREFORD TWP., Pa. - Fire has forced the United States Postal Service to suspend its operations at a post office in eastern Berks County.

The Hereford post office on Star Road in Hereford Township was badly damaged by fire on Monday. No mail or packages were damaged, officials said, but the building is in need of extensive repairs.

In the meantime, the Palm post office at 801 Gravel Pike (Route 29) in neighboring Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, will be filling the void left by Hereford's closing, USPS officials announced Tuesday.

The Palm post office has modified its hours to be open from 8 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. until 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Hereford post office box customers can pick up their mail at the Palm facility; street delivery of mail to homes and businesses will continue as normal, officials said.

Investigators continue to seek the cause of the fire. Anyone with information is asked to call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455.
