Firefighters make quick work of fire in Berks County

BERN TWP., Pa. - A fire extinguisher helped keep flames from spreading in Bern Township on Friday.

The fire broke out shortly before 1:30 p.m. in the back porch area of a home at 1110 Van Reed Rd., not far from the Route 222-Route 183 interchange in Bern Township, officials said.

Two people were home at the time. One of them used a fire extinguisher in an attempt to put out the fire, officials said.

Numerous firefighters were dispatched to the scene, while others, including city firefighters, were put on standby to respond, if needed.

The firefighters quickly managed to get control of the fire. Investigators have not yet determined how it started.

There were no reports of injuries.
