BERKS COUNTY - The Fleetwood and Governor Mifflin football teams won huge divisional games in week 5. The Tigers and Mustangs are hoping to build off those victories in the second half of the season.
Fleetwood (2-0, 3-2) stands alone atop the Berks II standings. For the first time in program history, they are 2-0 in league play. With a win at Northern Lebanon this week, the Tigers will break the school record for wins with four.
Fleetwood rolled past Schuylkill Valley last Saturday, 31-7, answering many questions about James Martinez's team this year. The Tigers can now be considered viable contenders in Section II and should figure into the District III playoff picture as well.
It's unfamiliar territory for the program, but territory that the Tigers don't plan to leave anytime soon.
Governor Mifflin (2-0, 3-2) throttled then-undefeated Exeter on Friday night, 41-7, to tie Muhlenberg atop the Berks I standings.
That tie will be broken this Friday when the Muhls visit the Mustangs in Shillington.
Governor Mifflin was pleased with the complete game effort it turned in against Exeter. It's the type of performance the team has been waiting for, especially after a couple of blowout losses in non-league play.
The Mustangs think that if they can duplicate that performance on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, then they should have a good shot against the Muhls.
But you can bet Muhlenberg will come in ready to play in this game.
