Four vehicle accident shuts down Philadelphia Pike in Cumru Township

CUMRU TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A three vehicle accident closed a portion of Philadelphia Pike in Cumru Township Saturday afternoon.

Officials at the Berks County Communications Center said the road was closed between Poplar Neck Road and Valley Stream Road.

Police said the accident occurred shortly after 4:00 Saturday afternoon. Police said the accident occurred after an eastbound vehicle began breaking down. Other vehicles began illegally passing the slowed vehicle. A westbound minivan stopped to avoid an oncoming car, but was rear ended by another westbound vehicle. That vehicle was in turn rear ended by a third vehicle.

Three people were hospitalized, but police said none of the injuries were serious

Police said Philadelphia Pike reopened just before 6:00 p.m.
