Friday night shooting turns deadly

Reading shooting

READING, Pa. - Police said a man has been shot dead just outside a judge's office on the corner of Perry and North 10th Streets in Reading.

On the same corner as Magisterial District judge Thomas Xavios' office, police were in the midst of an active investigation Friday night. It all started around 8 o'clock.

Officials in the Berks County Coroner's office said right now the man is identified as a John Doe, as they are still working to identify him.  They said the manner of death was homicide, and he died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Business owners who work nearby and a passerby said they heard a car speeding down Perry Street toward 9th Street and when they looked out they saw a man was lying in the street.

A local shop owner said she recognized the man as a customer. She said he was black in his early- to mid-thirties. Police roped off a large area including parts of Perry Street and an alley behind 10th Street. They placed evidence markers. And one was next to what appeared to be drugs.

The Reading Police said this is an active investigation and they have not indicated whether they know the identity of the man who was shot.

District Attorney John Adams said they believe this shooting was drug-related and it happened on a busy intersection. They believe someone might have seen what happened and are asking people to contact Reading Police (610-655-6116) or Crime Alert Berks County (1-877-373-9913).
