Gruesome details emerge in killing of Colebrookdale man

Authorities say suspect planned brutal attack

READING, Pa. - Matthew Boyer left his home just outside Boyertown early Thursday morning with the plan to kill his girlfriend's father, Stephen Kriebel, according to the Berks County district attorney.

Boyer, 32, packed a bag that contained a ski mask, a gun, and a knife and then drove to Kriebel's home in the 100 block of Cleaver School Road in Colebrookdale Township, officials said.

Boyer then used his girlfriend's key to enter Kriebel’s home through the front door, went to his bedroom and began his attack, they added.

"During the confrontation, [Boyer] ended up using a baseball bat and also shot Mr. Kriebel approximately six times," said District Attorney John Adams.

Officials said Boyer then went to the bathroom to wash blood from his face and apologized to Kriebel's wife, who witnessed the homicide, officials said.

"There's just no words to describe what trauma this victim's family must be going through," added Adams.

Police caught up with Boyer at his home in Douglass Township, Montgomery County, just over the Berks border. After a brief foot chase, they arrested him.

Boyer later told investigators he thought about surrendering to Colebrookdale police but went back home to talk to his girlfriend, according to court documents.

Those who knew Kriebel said they are stunned.

"It's just very shocking. I just can't believe it. He wouldn't hurt a fly. He's so calm and laid back," said Mark Reifsnyder, who has known Kriebel for about 40 years.
