Woman killed, husband injured in domestic incident

HAMBURG, Pa. - Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Berks County woman and the wounding of her husband over the weekend.

Police responded shortly before 5:30 p.m. Saturday to the call of a domestic incident in the 400 block of North Fifth Street in Hamburg.

Upon arrival, they found Suzanne Lenkiewicz, 58, dead and her husband, Gary Lenkiewicz, 56, seriously injured.

Gary Lenkiewicz was taken to Reading Hospital, where he has since been upgraded from critical to stable condition.

Pennsylvania State Police were called in to investigate.

Berks County District Attorney John Adams said that police are not searching for a suspect and that investigators believe the incident was between the husband and wife.

"There was a history of some domestic incidents in the household," Adams said. "I believe that our investigation will indicate that this couple was on the verge of breaking up, but we're still trying to answer a lot of questions."

The investigation is ongoing, and so far no charges have been filed. Officials have not released any other details.

The homicide has left the community in shock.

"My wife was pretty shook up about it. Her and Suzanne would talk, that kind of thing, but nothing leads you to think something like this would happen," said Stan Henne, a neighbor.

An autopsy is scheduled Monday for Suzanne Lenkiewicz.
