Heavy rain briefly floods Spring Street Subway in Reading

Berks under freeze warning between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday

READING, Pa. - Heavy rain that fell in Reading late Tuesday morning was again too much for the Spring Street Subway to handle.

Police blocked access to the tunnel between North 6th and 8th streets as the water rose to a level unsafe for vehicles to pass through.

The subway, long notorious for flooding during periods of heavy rain and sudden downpours, reopened once the rain slowed and the water receded.

69 News Meteorologist Matt Broderick says minor flooding will be possible until the rain tapers off or briefly mixes with or changes to wet snow as much colder air moves into Berks County late Monday. An inch or two of rain is likely from the storm.

A freeze warning is in effect for Berks County from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. Wednesday.
