Here's why Necco wafers are in high demand at Boyertown shop

Company plans shutdown if it can't find a buyer

BOYERTOWN, Pa. - Timeless classics don't have to change for anything or anyone, even if they taste like "chalk," as one candy customer purports.

Necco wafers are the multi-colored, oddly-flavored bites of sugar that have been the same since 1847, and they get mixed reviews.

"We have a lot of people that come in, and when they see the Necco wafers, they get excited, and then they have friends that come in, 'I can't believe you eat this,'" said Rachael Kehler, owner of The Peppermint Stick Candy Store in Boyertown.

But the wafers may not be long for this world. According to multiple reports, Necco will shut down if it doesn't find a buyer, and that's a problem for Kelher.

"If Necco goes out of business, it's going to take a big chunk of my product away," said Kehler. "It's taking away peoples' memories."

Of course, Necco makes more than just those wafers; you're probably familiar with the conversation hearts that are commonly seen around Valentine's Day.

Whether or not you like the candy, or the company for that matter, you might have a sentimental attachment. That's the case for Debbie Duggan, who said the wafers remind her of chalk, but she gets past that because of her memories attached to the candy.

"I remember eating these down the shore on the boardwalk with my grandmother, and she would hand one out to all of her 12 grandchildren," said Duggan. "I would feel kind of upset knowing that was the childhood memory of mine and knowing how much she loved it. It's like a little piece of her."

A piece of her family from a piece of candy. It doesn't get much sweeter than that.
