Reading homeowner climbs through window to escape house fire

READING, Pa. - The Christmas holiday turned scary for a Reading man, when flames broke out inside his home.

The fire was reported around 10 a.m. Monday in the 1100 block of North Sixth Street.

Firefighters said a man inside escaped through a second-floor window and onto the roof of the porch.

They said the fire had started on the first floor and spread upstairs. Firefighters were forced to strike a second alarm for extra manpower.

"We had a very tough time getting into the building, because the front door and the rear door was locked up tight, so until we got in, the fire got built up inside," said Deputy Chief Ronald Banks, Reading Fire Department.

Officials said there was some damage to a house next door.

The fire remains under investigation.
