Local police step up patrols for Memorial Day weekend

EXETER TWP., Pa. - Millions are hitting the roads for the unofficial start of summer.

AAA estimates it could be the busiest Memorial Day for travelers in more than a decade.

It expects more than 39 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles this holiday weekend. Almost 90 percent of those traveling will be driving.

Police are reminding drivers to be safe and drive defensively.

In Berks County, Exeter Township Police will step up patrols this weekend.

"We do have a number of officers on this weekend. We also have brought in a few extra officers for the busy holiday weekend to do some extra enforcement," said Officer Sean Fullerton with Exeter Township Police.

Fullerton said they'll be watching out for reckless and impaired drivers.

"Especially on a holiday weekend sometimes there is drinking involved. Anytime anyone is going out make sure they have a way to get home in case they do have a drink or two," added Fullerton.
