Local shops prep for Small Business Saturday

If you are not too tired of shopping yet, get ready. Small businesses along Penn Avenue are preparing for major holiday shopping on Small Business Saturday.

"We are hoping to get a pretty good turnout for small business Saturday. I think a lot of people in the community are really going to support the small businesses on the strip here," said Caitlin Dunbar with Baldwin Brass Center.

Store owners say small businesses can offer unique items that you just cannot find in a big box chain.

"The quality of what you are going to see in a store like Jan Ray, as well as Penn Avenue in general, is superior to what you are going to see in any department store locally," said Karen Verleur with Jan Ray Ladies Fashions.

In addition to finding one-of-a-kind items, small businesses encourage shoppers to visit their stores to support the local economy.

"You want to help the community thrive and you want to kind of show your support for the town and the community that you live in," said Dunbar.

Shoppers agree saying it is not just about supporting the economy, but also supporting local people.

"Everyone that has these small businesses are our peers, you know, people we have grown up with and people that have grown up in the area. So it is really supporting people you know," said shopper Kate Barnes.

Most of the small businesses on Penn Street are open from 10-6 Saturday.
