Makeshift memorial grows for Clifford McFarlane, victim of Reading homicide

Victim's 29-year-old son shot several times; shooting suspect in custody

Makeshift memorial grows for man gunned down outside bar

READING, Pa. - A makeshift memorial of balloons and candles now marks the spot where a Reading man lost his life early Sunday morning.

Clifford "Whimpy" McFarlane and his son were leaving the Gargoyle Lounge, a bar on North Eighth Street in Reading, when police said someone with a gun ambushed the two men and opened fire.

The elder McFarlane, 49, was killed; his 29-year-old son, Marlone, was shot several times and rushed to the trauma center at Reading Hospital, where he later underwent surgery, according to Berks County District Attorney John Adams.

A friend of the victims chased down the alleged gunman and held him until officers arrived, said police, adding that the unidentified suspect suffered severe injuries in the altercation.

Police are now trying to determine whether a second gunman was involved in the shooting.

"There's evidence that would indicate possibly a second shooter was there, who we have not identified at this point," said Sgt. John Solecki. Reading Police Dept.

It appears McFarlane was targeted.  According to court documents, the suspect said, "He should have died a long time ago."

For now, the suspect is only charged with attempted homicide until ballistics tests determine if there was more than one gun, and if so, which one fired the deadly shot.

The suspect is also charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and possession of a gun with an altered serial number.

Police are asking any witnesses to please come forward. They can call Crime Alert Berks County with their anonymous tip. The toll-free number is 877-373-9913. A cash reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
