Man charged in fatal beating pleads guilty to simple assault

READING, Pa. - A Reading man charged in a fatal beating in November 2016 is out of jail.

Elree Williams pleaded guilty Friday to simple assault in a deal with the Berks County district attorney.

Williams, 36, had been charged with murder in the death of 42-year-old Jose Valentin, who was robbed and beaten to death outside a bar in the 900 block of Penn Street.

"After we continued to provide information to the commonwealth to demonstrate that Mr. Williams had no knowledge that a robbery was going to take place and that he had only been involved in a minor altercation with Mr. Valentin, the commonwealth made the right decision in offering the charges that he accepted a plea to," said Williams' attorney, Jay Nigrini.

Another man charged in Valentin's death, Darriel Everett, is due in court for a hearing next week.
