Man fatally shot by police after allegedly pointing gun at officers

READING, Pa. - A man was shot and killed by police Friday night after he allegedly pointed a shotgun at officers responding to a call in Reading.

Officers responded to a call of a man pointing a shotgun at people in their backyard in the 200 block of South 12th Street just before 8 p.m., according to the Berks County district attorney's office.

A witness at the scene said the man, identified as Michael Todd Stoudt, 62, was upset over someone smoking on the property. Police said the group of people, which included six children between ages two to 12, retreated into their home.

RPD officers then tried to make contact with Stoudt outside of his home in the 1200 block of Spruce Street. Police said Stoudt was on his front porch holding a shotgun.

Officials said officers told him to drop his weapon, but he proceeded to point the shotgun in the officers' direction, prompting one of the officers to fire several shots.

Stoudt died at the scene.

The Berks County DA's office is investigating the shooting, which is protocol for shootings involving police officers.
