Man steals money from church on Easter, police say

LOWER HEIDELBERG TWP., Pa. - A western Pennsylvania man is behind bars in Berks County, accused of stealing money from a church.

Jayson Rivera pried open a money box in the basement of the Calvary Bible Fellowship Church on Penn Avenue in Lower Heidelberg Township on Easter Sunday, April 16, and took cash, according to court documents released Monday.

The church's manager told police he recognized Rivera on surveillance video as someone who had been bused to the church several times from the nearby Wernersville Community Corrections Center.

Rivera, 31, of La Belle, Fayette County, was charged with theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, and criminal mischief. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $10,000 bail.
