Many shoppers say they're skipping Thanksgiving shopping

Thanksgiving is a time for families to take a break from the daily grind and spend time together. But in recent years, big box retailers keep pushing shopping hours earlier and earlier.

Stores like Best Buy and Walmart are opening at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Target, Sears and Kohl's will welcome shoppers at 8 p.m., Toys R' Us at 5 p.m. and K-Mart as early as 6 a.m. Thanksgiving.

Despite the temptation to shop during the early hours, the overwhelming majority of shoppers we spoke with said they are not giving in.

"No. We are going to stay home, have a meal with the family, watch some football," said Chris Celmer, of Blandon.

"I think it is kind of a bummer. I think Thanksgiving you should spend with your family and I do not think you should be shopping," said Rachel Suydam, of Fleetwood.

Other dedicated Black Friday shoppers said they love scoring deals.

"I will be getting up at midnight, heading out the door, probably not going to do my hair. I will put my ball cap on and head out and get some deals," said Brandi Grove, of Virginia.

But they are not sure about doing it on Thanksgiving.

"I am conflicted only because I have a brother-in-law that is in retail and we would love for him to be around all day long and so I feel bad for the people that actually have to work in the stores," said Grove.

With less than 24 hours until the stores open on Thanksgiving, the lines that are typically there for Black Friday were nonexistent, a sign that some will stick to Black Friday shopping as usual.

"We will go out shopping on Friday," said Celmer.
