Maxatawny Twp. moves closer to forming own police department

MAXATAWNY TWP., Pa. - Maxatawny Township may form its own police department.

The supervisors may pass an ordinance in early June to establish the Maxatawny Township Police Department.

The ordinance, supervisors said, includes a provision for police services to be contracted out to Lyons and Topton.

All three municipalities are served by the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department, but that department will disband at the end of the year.

That move was brought about by the action of officials in Upper Macungie Twp., Lehigh Co., who voted to leave the regional force and form the township's own police department.
