Muhlenberg renews superintendent's contract, gives raise

'We want him to stay'

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. - The recent academic successes and growth of the Muhlenberg School District have reflected well on Superintendent Dr. Joseph Macharola.

At its meeting Wednesday night, the Muhlenberg School Board voted to renew his contract two years into his existing five-year contract.

“We want to make sure he knows we want him to stay,” said board President Otto Voit.

Hired in 2013, Macharola's five-year contract was already once renewed in 2015.

The new contract, which bumps Macharola's annual salary from $175,000 to $180,000, is good through 2022.

While board members Thomas Gross and Mark Nelson voted "no," Voit stated that the only disagreement was "when" to offer a contract extension, not "if."

"We all agree that we want Dr. Macharola to stay at Muhlenberg," Voit said.

Macharola acknowledged that he is happy to stay on board, stating, "I'm having the time of my life here."

The board bid farewell to two outgoing board members, Garrett Hyneman and Jacklyn Rusnock. Thanking them for their service and commitment, Macharola called them "two of the finest individuals I've called had the pleasure of working with on a school board."

Multiple board members expressed their gratitude, all saying they've learned so much from Hyneman and Rusnock.

Upon being presented with a departing gift from board president Otto Voit, the two acknowledged the "mixed emotions" that come with leaving their posts.

Hyneman acknowledged that a "proud moment" of his life was serving on the board.

Hyneman and Rusnock's seats will be filled by Samuel Hardy and Randall Madara.

The next Muhlenberg School Board meeting is December 4.
