Multiple alarms struck for fire on golf course in Union

UNION TWP., Pa. - A fire heavily damaged a large storage building on a golf course in Berks County.

The fire was initially reported shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday at the Blackwood Golf Course, 510 Red Corner Rd., in Union Township.

A golf course employee told a 69 News crew on the scene that the building on fire served as a storage shed for the course's maintenance and landscaping needs. The employee said about $500,000 worth of equipment was inside at the time the fire erupted.

At the height of the fire, a large plume of black smoke could be seen from several miles around the golf course.

A second alarm was struck to summon additional manpower to the scene, which is just off Route 724, east of Birdsboro.

Investigators have not yet determined how the fire started.
