Murder trial of William Landis, Berks businessman, nearing an end

Closing arguments given in Berks businessman's murder trial

READING, Pa. - The trial of a Berks County businessman accused of killing his wife and causing a standoff with police is nearing an end.

Attorneys presented their closing arguments Friday to the jury hearing the trial of William Landis.

Landis shot and killed his wife, Sharon, inside their home in Spring Township in October 2009, police said.

Landis' attorney argued that the couple had a fight and struggled with a gun before it accidentally went off and killed Sharon.

Landis, the prosecutor said, shot at his wife three times, proving that her death was no accident.

Landis then fired at responding officers during a six-hour standoff that followed the killing, officials said. A separate trial will be held on charges related to the standoff.

Landis owned of a multimillion dollar trucking company, Landis Express, in Muhlenberg Township.
