Neighbor helps save homeowner from fire

EXETER TWP., Pa. - A Berks County woman is counting her blessings after her home was almost destroyed by flames.

"I feel like I've been through a war," said Helen Updegrove.

She says she smelled smoke around 6 a.m. Thursday in her home, located in the 200 block of Dauphin Place in Exeter Township.

Due to health issues that cause her thighs and legs to fill with fluid, she called her neighbor for help.

"I couldn't see within four feet in front of me, but I have been in the house once or twice prior. So, I knew the hallways," said Jim Wack.

Wack, along with his sons, broke the windows so that air could get into the home.

"Like I said, it was a heck of way to wake up this morning," said Wack.

Firefighters from the Reifton Fire Co. finally pulled Updegrove to safety.

The fire department recommends that if you have a fire, call the fire department first.

As far as what caused the fire, Helen says she believes mixed chemicals in bucket in the bathroom are to blame.
