JEFFERSON TWP., Pa. - We've learned new details about the Tulpehocken High School teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.
Authorities said it was the student who pursued the teacher at Tulpehocken Area High School.
Nicole Kurowski is out on bail, but battling serious charges. According to court documents, the 17-year-old boy got her number from another student and started texting her first. Investigators said she initially resisted, telling the boy it was not professional.
Two weeks later, things changed when the teen started texting her again, which led to a nearly year-long relationship, said officials.
Kurowski, 27, has been a physical education teacher and cheerleading coach at Tulpehocken for the past two years.
According to investigators, thousands of text messages and dozens of pictures were exchanged between Kurowski and the senior, dating back to October 2012. One picture depicted her lying in a bathtub, according to court documents.
"Nothing that I've ever seen indicated anything like that to me," said Mike Denatale, who lives a few doors down from Kurowski.
Kurowski first appeared on 69 News more than a year ago. She's the assistant manager at the Antietam Pool and helped honor a 14-year-old for rescuing his friend from drowning.
"Teenagers can do nice things and will do the right thing when put to the test," she said during an interview in June 2012.
Authorities allege she did not do the right thing, and "I love you" messages were exchanged almost daily, and sometimes indecent contact took place during school hours.
Now, a community is in disbelief.
"I don't think man or woman should have any relationship with a student," said Frederick Hotzman, who lives across from the pool.
The relationship came to light when authorities received a tip, officials said.
Kurowski has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of her criminal case.
