Alex Rodriguez to play against Fightin Phils in Reading

READING, Pa. - Injured New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez is set to join the Trenton Thunder as he recovers from hip surgery.

Rodriguez is expected to be with the Double-A team as the Thunder open a three-game series against the Fightin Phils at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading on Monday. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Rodriguez played with Tampa on Saturday and Sunday, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a double and two RBIs.

"I thought today was probably the happiest I've been with the way my body reacted," Rodriguez said after Saturday's game. "I thought the way I swung the bat, it felt like I had more power behind my swings. Those are the types of things I'm looking for."

Rodriguez, a three-time American League MVP and 14-time All-Star, underwent arthroscopic hip surgery during the off-season. He hasn't played in the majors yet this season.

Throughout 19 seasons in the majors -- 2,524 games with the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees -- Rodriguez has hit .300 with 647 home runs, 1,950 RBIs and 512 doubles.

Rodriguez is the latest in a string of Major League Baseball players to pass through Reading in recent weeks. Others have included Chase Utley, Carlos Ruiz, John Lannan and Erik Kratz.
