No plans for snow emergency in Reading; others declare

READING, Pa. - With the first flakes yet to fly, some municipalities in Berks County are getting ahead of the approaching storm by declaring a snow emergency.

Among those to make such declarations so far are Bern Township (12 a.m. Wednesday - 6 a.m. Thursday), Birdsboro (starting at 10 p.m. Tuesday; recycling pickup moved to Thursday), Boyertown (8 a.m. Wednesday - 8 a.m. Thursday), Fleetwood (starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday), Hamburg (starting at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday), Hereford Township (3 a.m. Wednesday - 7 a.m. Thursday), Kutztown (8 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Thursday), Longswamp Township (12 a.m. Wednesday - 12 p.m. Thursday), Lower Alsace Township (7 a.m. Wednesday - noon Thursday), Lower Heidelberg Township (starting at 6 a.m. Wednesday), Maidencreek Township (starting at 12 a.m. Wednesday), Muhlenberg Township (starting at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday), Oley Township (6 a.m. Wednesday - 8 a.m. Thursday), Shillington (7 p.m. Tuesday - 7 a.m. Thursday), Shoemakersville (12 a.m. Wednesday - 12 a.m. Thursday), Sinking Spring (10 p.m. Tuesday - 8 a.m. Thursday), South Heidelberg Township (7 p.m. Tuesday until 11 p.m. Wednesday), Topton (starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday), Washington Township (starting at 12 a.m. Wednesday), Wernersville (12 a.m. Wednesday - 7 a.m. Thursday), and West Reading (starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday).

At this point, Reading has no plans to declare a snow emergency, according to Cindy Castner, an assistant to Mayor Wally Scott.

The city did announce that trash and recycling collection will be pushed back one day, meaning Wednesday's route will be collected Thursday, Thursday's route will be collected Friday, and Friday's route will be collected Saturday.
