Officials: Man shot and killed after repeatedly pointing guns at police in Berks County

Police shoot man with weapons

WERNERSVILLE, Pa. - Police in Berks County shot and killed a man who they say repeatedly pointed handguns at them after ignoring numerous orders to drop his weapons.

Western Berks Police say they were called to the area of 24 East Washington Ave. in Wernersville around 8 p.m. Saturday for a report of 20-year-old Jonathan David Rutkowski walking with two guns stuck in his pants.

Police say they made contact with the Wernersville man on North Church Street, at which time he pointed both handguns at officers multiple times.

Police say Rutkowski, who they described as non-compliant, ran away in the direction of Route 422.

Police say Rutkowski ran across the highway, at which time he was nearly hit by a car.

After crossing the highway, he began walking on South Church Street with officers from four police departments following him in their cars.

Police say Rutkowski then got down on one knee near the railroad tracks and pointed both guns at the police officers.

That's when police say they began firing shots. They say he then went behind a large metal sign and again pointed the guns at officers.

Police say Rutkowski then went down to the ground, at which time officers moved in and shouted orders for him to drop the weapons.

As they got closer, Rutkowski pointed one of the guns at officers, causing them to shoot and kill the man, according to police.

Rutkowski was pronounced dead at the by the Berks County coroner.
