Officials: Neighbor saves woman's life in fire

New details emerged Monday in a fire that injured a woman and killed her pet dog early Sunday morning.

Officials said the victim, Kristin Page, was restrained by a neighbor when she tried to run back into her burning home in the 1300 block of Friedensburg Road in Lower Alsace Twp., Berks Co., in hopes of saving her pit bull.

Rick Gerhart, the township's fire marshal, called that neighbor a hero.

"[Page] wanted to go back inside and was held by the neighbor. Had she gone [back] in the house, more than likely she would not have come back out," said Gerhart. "And that does make the neighbor, in my opinion, a hero."

Early reports suggested that Page suffered burn injuries and smoke inhalation after returning to her home to save her dog; on Monday, Gerhart said that was a miscommunication. Rather, he said Page was injured when first exiting the residence. She was transported to a hospital for treatment of her injuries and released, officials said.

Gerhart said the fire remains under investigation. He told 69 News that the duplex is fully uninhabitable for now, but can be repaired.
