Officials stress Craigslist safety

Reading man charged in killing of man selling car on website

Officials stress Craigslist safety

READING, Pa. - Some may think twice about using Craigslist following the shooting death of a man who tried to sell his car through the website.

Tyrell Ronald Young is behind the crime, police said.

The Reading man shot Eric Ervin in the neck early Wednesday, killing him in front of his auto-detailing business in Allentown, investigators said.

At the center of this investigation is a 2003 silver BMW that was advertised on Craigslist.

Young was caught driving that very BMW Wednesday morning in Reading, authorities said. He was arrested at North 3rd and Walnut streets.

Neighbors who live in the area said they are now thinking twice about clicking on websites like Craigslist.

"Of course it's going to make me leery, but at the same time, some of the best things you can shop for is on Craiglist. Just hard to resist, yeah, just hard to
resist," said Omar Green.

These crimes are no stranger to Berks County. In January, a Reading man was robbed after he tried to buy sneakers through Facebook.

The victim came to a park in the 1100 block of Pike Street with the agreed-upon $100 for the sneakers. Instead, he was robbed and attacked, police said.

During Thursday's news conference, where police announced they would charge with Young, 27, with homicide, they also spoke about the possibility of "safe zones."

"I'd rather people doing business on Craigslist and through means anonymous use public places, well-lit places, places like in front of a police station, to conduct these transactions," said Chief Joel Fitzgerald, Allentown Police Dept.

Police said if you purchase something through any online site, take someone with you to pick up the product, and do it in a public, well-lit area.
